Natural Monument Großer Pfahl

description

The pale, a long way visible quartz riff, belongs to the important geological natural monuments of Bavaria. Almost straightaway it proceeds on a length of 150 km near Linz in Austria to Schwarzenfeld in the Upper Palatinate.

Distinctive points: The “Großer Pfahl” near Viechtach (B85 to Cham), the pale near the castle ruin Weißenstein (Regen) and the pale near castle Thierlstein (Cham). The pale is a "crack" filled with quartz and schist in the ground of the mountain range of the Bavarian Forest. By the end of the Palaeozoic about 275 million years ago the biggest movements in this weak zone appeared.
