Rock Formations – an Important Natural Feature

Der Große Pfahl bei Viechtach - eine Naturdenkmal von 150 km Länge
A rock formation is evidence of the elemental forces of nature. The quartz filled fissure in the mountain landscape of the Bavarian Forest was formed more than 300 million years ago. It stretches for nearly 150 kilometres. And in the few places where the rocks break through the surface, amazing rock formations have appeared.

These rock formations are amongst the most important natural features of Bavaria. The German name, Pfahl, is derived from the Latin word Palladius, meaning in this instance pale, sallow. The rock formations have always puzzled the people of ArberLand. And the locals refer to them as Devil’s Walls and Witches’ Work.

The stuff of legends and myths can easily be examined closely today: Near Viechtach, the "Großer Pfahl" towers over the B 85 road. Similar sights can be seen at the Weißenstein castle ruins (near Regen) and at Schloss Thierlstein (near Cham).
