Latest news: Hikers choose the Bavarian Forest as their favourite destination

The most popular walking region in Southern Germany is the Bavarian Forest. This is the result of a reader survey by the specialist magazine "outdoor" published in its January edition: 48% of the hikers asked chose the Bavarian Forest.

The next most popular places in the South were the Black Forest and the Berchtesgaden area, while the Elbsandsteingebirge was the most popular area in the North. "outdoor" describes itself as the ‚magazine for everyone who likes to be active in natural surroundings". The magazine is the undisputed market leaders in its sector, having gained its reputation above all because of the independence of its editorial.

The tourism sector in the Bavarian Forest is delighted with the result. "A great result which confirms how highly our region is regarded throughout Europe as a place for walking", said Susanne Wagner of the Touristisches Service Center of Arberland, not only the most densely forested area of Bavaria, within the Natural Park and beside the National Park, offering almost every walking experience imaginable:

A multitude of natural features such as the "Große Pfahl" or the "Linden in Frath", many protected natural areas, long distance and pilgrimage paths, interesting nature trails and themed walks, remote mountain paths and mountain peak tours on one of the 132 mountains of more than 1,000 metres – according to Susanne Wagner "the Bavarian Forest is a wonderful place for forgetting day to day worries, enjoying nature and walking as far as your feet will carry you".

These can be downloaded onto a GPS Handheld, which are available to hire in many places – and guarantee that you can find your way even in areas completely unknown to you.
