Monuments and Buildings in ArberLand

ArberLand has a wide range of artistic and historical treasures: The imposing monastery at Gotteszell, the baroque church at Rinchnach, the rococo church in Frauenau are fine examples of sacred art. And the castle ruins at Weißenstein, Kollnburg, Neunussberg and Altnussberg are reminders of times long past.

Pilgrimage destinations such as St. Hermann near Bischofsmais, the mountain church of "Mariä Namen" in Zwiesel, the "Guntherkircherl" chapel in Gehmannsberg near Rinchnach or the "Osterbründl" near Ruhmannsfelden are witness to piety in days gone by. Votive images, carved or silver pieces or large or ornate candles were and are left there by believers.

Death Boards and Crosses
Memorials can be found on almost every corner in ArberLand. Death boards are found at chapels, trees and beside crosses. Before mortuaries existed, the boards were used for keeping the corpse in their living room or bedroom until the day of burial. Afterwards, the name and dates of the dead person would be etched in the board and it would be set up as a memorial. It was thought that the soul of the dead person was only released from purgatory when the death board had rotted away.

Farmhouses and the Silberberg
There are also secular buildings of interest to visitors. There are lovingly restored and still occupied farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries, the farmers’ memorial in Kollnburg and the mysterious underground passages in Zwiesel. Many large glassworks are a reminder of the heyday of the craft of glassmaking. And near Bodenmais is the archaeological excavation of the oldest factory site in Bavaria, the vitriol works at the Silberberg.
