The modern
glass museum in Frauenau gives a unique, exciting insight into the history of glass. Glass production provided the people of ArberLand with money and bread over a long period. Even today glass objects are produced here with considerable attention to detail. The glass museum in Frauenau shows how it is done.
Take a journey through the history of glass in Europe. Experience how the rise and fall of different cultural eras in Europe is reflected in glass.
From Kiln to Finished GlassThe centrepiece of the museum – and of the life of a glassmaker – is a kiln. It is partly made out of authentic materials and partly out of artistic glass; around it is work and daily life. From the heat of the workplace of the glassmakers to the decoration of the glass with paintbrush, grinding or engraving machine. Finishing, quality control and packing – a glass passes through many hands before it reaches its resting place on a festive table.
The "Glass Heart" of the Bavarian ForestFrauenau is the "Glass Heart" of the Bavarian Forest and with the new glass museum it has a building which is unique in Europe. With approx. 1,300 square metres, it presents the history of glass from its origins until the present day. The exhibition of modern glass with an internationally famous collection and regularly changing special exhibitions complete comprehensive display.
Snuff Bottles and a Glass MazeThe various facets of glass as a material are shown clearly in the glass museum. The foresters call the colourful snuff bottles "Bixl". The Frauenau glass museum has one of the largest collections of these items in the world. And the Udo Dammert Collection gives a unique overview of reverse glass painting in Europe and Asia.
Glass in a luminescent cathedral, baroque luxury glasses, a glass garden maze: it is no exaggeration to describe the Frauenau glass museum as a house of international standing!
