The Glass Ark has dropped Anchor in ArberLand

Die gläserne Arche hat ihren Anker mitten im Bayerischen Wald ausgworfen.

The Glass Ark has finally dropped anchor at the foot of the Lusen in ArberLand after a long journey. The Glass Ark is a powerful symbol of peace and tolerance: nearly 5 metres long, weighing 3 tons and made out of 480 individual glass panels.

A glass grinder and a glass painter made the glass ark in 2003 under the supervision of glass artists Ronald Fischer (Frauenau) and Hubert Stern (Spiegelau). Czech sculptors put the boat onto a “hand” made of wood. For 3 years, the glass ark travelled through the border regions of Bavaria and Bohemia.

The main themes were the natural surroundings of the Bavarian Forest and Sumava National Parks, cross border links and the glass culture of the region: there were meetings, discussions and events at 19 locations in the forest wilderness, near churches and glassworks.

Art in the Wild Bavarian Forest
In 2008 the glass ark has dropped anchor at the foot of the Lusen, inspiring contemplation, conveying a message of hope and appealing for peace and tolerance. It is in the middle of a wild forest but easily accessible on foot from both sides of the border.

This work of art provides a permanent reminder of the journey of the glass ark. Its success exceeded all expectations. This ark of wood and glass has brought people together. Thousands met at and near the ark to exchange views, to celebrate and to reflect on conservation and the future of the region.

A further reminder is the film "Der letzte Hafen".
